Every year especially during rainy season several precious lives are taken away by Cholera. According to UNICEF, more than 28,900 cholera cases were reported in Ghana in 2014 claiming 217 deaths.

As a preventive measure in our operational communities, Cheerful Hearts Foundation in collaboration with the Nyanyano Health Center trained 150 students ranging from 12-16years from selected schools within the Nyanyano community on Cholera prevention.  A 2-day training was held at the Nyanyano Methodist Junior High School for the selected students.

On the 23rd April, 2015, the trained students who are serving as community Ambassadors for Cholera went house to house within the Nyanyano community to educate every household on the causes of Cholera, sign & symptoms, first aids on cholera and referrals of Cholera victims to the nearest health facility to avoid any death cases. The Ambassadors grouped into 5, were each assigned a Nurse as well as some staff of the Cheerful Hearts Foundation to serve as mentors and guide to help grow the capacity of these young Ambassadors.

Several comments from the young Ambassadors, showed how this training and campaign exercise has helped to improve their confidence and public speaking abilities not forgetting the joy they hold in their hearts for gaining such an opportunity to educate and impact on their community.

The days’ activity ended with some musical session where these young ambassadors had lots of fun through dancing, met new friends and had lunch together. The Executive Director of Cheerful Hearts Foundation, Mr. Eric Opoku Agyemang also used the opportunity to encourage the young Ambassadors to continually engage community members in Cholera conversations to help increase the awareness to reduce reported cases of Cholera and death related records in Ghana.
